She put on a brave face and even afforded a smile, but behind it all, you could tell the pain that characterised Millicent Mugadi’s expulsion from the Big Brother House.
It was even more painful considering that she was only a hurdle away from the grand finale in the biggest reality TV show on the continent.
Had the 28-year-old made it past Sunday, she would have stood a chance of being one of the two finalists to go home with $200,000 (Sh18 million).
No Kenyan has won the top prize ever since the show started in 2002.
Women’s soccer
Dressed in a short tight blue dress drifting to her knees, Millicent, an actress, looked calm as she left, saying that she already had a plan for life beyond BBA.
A good footballer on the show, she revealed that she sponsors a women’s soccer team.
“Life is going to go on and I will continue with my acting and football career,” she told the show host Ike, struggling to hide her disappointment.
Vimbai from Zimbabwe was the first to be evicted, followed by Kim from Zambia before Millicent was shown the door.
But while it was sad for Kenyans to see Millicent leave, the eviction provided a big platform for two Kenyan musicians to shine on the continental stage.
Genge rapper Nonini was the first on stage wowing the crowd with the song Kadhaa. Although you could tell that most of the people in the audience couldn’t understand the words, they still jovially danced along.
Then came in Jaguar, whose song Kigeugeu remains one of the biggest pop songs in Kenya today. Dressed in his usual jeans and brown T-shirt, he also had a great performance.
Born and raised in Nairobi, Millicent, who speaks French, describes herself as having a great sense of humour.
She has starred in many movies, the recent one being Me, My Wife and Her Guru by Jitu Films, where she was the submissive and star-struck secretary Esther, to the Guru played by Ian Mbugua.
Millicent has also acted in TV drama, The Team, where she played Team Captain Johari.
Last year, the movie featuring Millicent and two popular Nollywood stars was released. It was titled Behind Closed Doors and starred Mike Ezuruonye and Annie Macauley.
Despite leaving the show, Millicent will be consoled that she is the first Kenyan to survive until a week to the final weekend in the Big Brother history.
Considering that she wasn’t even considered the favourite among the team from Kenya, Millicent was evidently very calculating in order to reach wherever she did.
Nic Wangondu, who was considered the favourite from Kenya, was voted out last month. She started on a high note when she became the first house mate to kiss a fellow house mate when the show started.
She locked lips with Alex from Ghana on the very first day of the show. However, as the show progressed, she took a low profile choosing to play an invisible game.
Bloggers have even suggested that she escaped nomination while in the Heads House because the other contestants failed to remember that she was in the house.
However, after the two houses merged, Millicent came back to the forefront. From then on, she managed to stay along because she knew how to hop from one girl’s camp to another and was even a mediator when they clashed.
But on the last huddle, betrayal and patriotism took over, costing Millicent a place. For instance, she had been very good friends with Nigerian Vina on the last week.
As Head of House, it was expected that Vina would reciprocate their friendship and save her from eviction. However, Vina clearly chose to go for patriotism, saving fellow country girl Karen.
Next Sunday, by this time, two house mates will each be US$200,000 (Sh18 million) richer — Lomwe (Malawi), Karen (Nigeria), Vina (Nigeria), Sharon O (Uganda), Wendall (Zimbabwe), Luclay (South Africa) or Hanni (Ethiopia). If the blogs are to be believed, Wendall and Karen are the front-runners.
