The number of candidates interested in the Nairobi mayoral seat continued to rise as PNU set next Saturday as its nomination date.
Campaigns for the seat were, however, dealt a major blow with Local Government PS Karega Mutahi banning retreats which, in the past, were used to strategise on a winning formula.
In a letter, Prof Karega said anyone who contravenes the order risks prosecution.
Githurai Ward councillor Gerald Kinoti announced at City Hall that he would run for the seat in the August 11 election.
He is seeking a PNU ticket. Others interested in the PNU ticket are councillors Mutunga Mutungi, Mwangi Gakuya, George Wanjohi and Benson Mutura. In ODM, acting mayor George Aladwa, councillors Elias Otieno and William Kinyany are interested in the party’s ticket.
Mr Kinoti said PNU councillors had agreed to hold primaries next Saturday to determine their candidate.
At the same time, Licensing Committee chairman and ODM nominated councillor Jaffer Kassam told politicians to stop interfering with the city mayoral elections.
In a statement on behalf of 30 councillors, Mr Kassam accused Embakasi MP Ferdinand Waititu and PNU Chief Whip Johnstone Muthama of campaigning for certain PNU councillors.
Mr Waititu has said PNU wants to use all means to ensure victory in readiness for devolved system of government beginning next year.
“We need to be left alone,” Mr Kassam, a close ally of Prime Minister Raila Odinga, said, adding they would endorse Mr Aladwa.
