No Easter cheer for 10 killed in accidents

By Renson MnyamweziTen people died in separate accidents and scores injured on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway at the Easter weekend.
In one accident, five family members died and eight others were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a petrol tanker near Ndii trading centre.
A woman and her two children aged three months and four years were among the relatives who perished in the accident. The family was heading to Mombasa.
Dangerous drivingTaita Deputy OCPD Justus Kitetu said the driver of the tanker was trying to overtake another vehicle, causing the accident.
The injured were admitted to Voi District Hospital.
In another incident, two people died after two lorries collided.
Separately at Ndara area, a bus and a lorry collided, killing two people and injuring eight. The injured were taken to Voi District Hospital where some were treated and discharged.
Mr Kitetu said the bus was travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa.
"The bus was overtaking another vehicle when it rammed the oncoming lorry," said the police officer.
Speaking at the scene, Kitetu said a Kenya Wildlife Service driver was injured after the car he was driving hit the bus.
The accidents come barely a day after another involving two lorries killed a driver and left two other people injured. One of the lorries, according to the police, was carrying drugs from Mombasa to Uganda. Last week, a senior GSU died and three others critically injured in an accident at the same spot.
The accidents bring to 11 the number of those killed at the section of the highway in the past two weeks.
Kitetu blamed the accidents on careless driving and cautioned drivers against speeding.
