Justice and constitutional affairs Minister Mutula Kilonzo is requesting for a 1.2 billion shillings allocation in this year's budget for the creation of a world class witness protection agency.
Mutula has decried the wanting status of protection of witnesses in serious cases that have aborted due to lack of evidence following threats to witnesses by suspects.
He has expressed concerns that if the situation is not addressed immediately then the country will continue grappling with serious criminal activities.
According to Mutula Kenya lacks a credible agency to protect witnesses especially while dealing with high profile cases and thus in most instances cases are lost due to lack of evidence.
The minister is now requesting for a 1.2 billion shillings for the creation of an agency able to protect witnesses in judicial processes. The amount will also be used to set up a world class criminal investigations institution.
Mutula has expressed concern that since the post election violence the country has not been able to carry out any investigations to ascertain what really went wrong during and after the disputed presidential elections.
