Five suspected gangsters have been shot dead in Nairobi.

Police also recovered four AK-47 rifles from the slain men near Mutindwa market in Umoja estate.

Also recovered from the suspected robbers was a hand grenade and over 100 rounds of live ammunition.

The bullet riddled bodies of the suspects were lined up outside the Jam Rescue Club and their stealthy weapons.

The quick action by police saved many lives, a witness said.

"The swift action by police marksmen has saved the lives of many innocent people who could have been caught up in the cross-fire,” a vegetable seller Onesmus Kamwatu Katungi told the Nation at the scene.

The suspects were described by police as "dangerous".

At the scene, an officer said they had been trailing the suspects since Friday night.
