Police report reveals MP Sonko is a wanted man

By STANDARD REPORTER
Makadara MP Gidion Kioko Mbuvi’s not-so-clean past could be catching up with him following confirmation by Police that he has two standing warrants of arrests.
If the law enforcement agents go by the book, whose laws no one is above except a sitting President, the politician known more by his nickname 'Sonko' could soon be a 'guest' of the law keepers.
But it all depends on whether the police chiefs want to apply the law on him as they would an ordinary member of the public.
The report also found out that Sonko goes by many aliases, but confirmed the fingerprints of the suspect sought in the warrants, belonged to the same person.
It is not clear if and when police will act on the report, but insiders said they are waiting for the Commissioner of Police Mathew Iteere to be briefed and to give direction.
It may have been with this in mind that Sonko knelt in prayer at Mr Kamlesh Pattni’s Hope International Ministries last week in Nairobi, as a sign of being ‘saved’, in the company of the former self-styled leader of proscribed Mungiki sect Maina Njenga.
It was here that he prided in the fact that, like Mr Njenga, he was a ‘graduate’ of Kenyan prisons, having spent time there.
With the statement he confirmed the fears of many Kenyans and earlier media reports that he could have a past that could make him unsuitable for public office and leadership.

Sources within the Police Force revealed investigations into the claims against the bling bling-bedecked youthful MP were complete and the file containing the findings has already been handed over to Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Director Ndegwa Muhoro.
good conductHe received the file at the weekend from a team of detectives that had been detailed to dig up ‘Sonko’s’ past.
The question would, however, remain how Sonko managed to secure a certificate of good conduct with which he secured clearance to run in the Makadara by-election, and what is even more curious is the fact that it is CID that issues the document, which is a prerequisite for eligibility to run for public office.
The detectives visited Mombasa’s Shimo la Tewa Prisons — where it was reported Mbuvi fled from custody — and various police stations where he is said to have been held before he was taken to court.
The team, which was led by the head of Flying Squad Mr Gideon Nyale is reported to have established the man whose warrants are pending is indeed the Makadara MP.
Those who have seen the file say the team found out that there are at least two pending warrants and it is now up to Mr Iteere and Mr Muhoro to decide how to proceed with his case.
Action on the file could be taken after Iteere, who left for the US at the weekend, comes back next week, revealed officials who alluded to "serious action that is pending" against ‘Sonko’.
Yesterday, Mr Muhoro declined to reveal details of the findings but he said warrants do not expire unless they were executed or withdrawn by the courts. "We will announce to you the findings soon. Give us time to study it," pleaded Muhoro on the telephone.
arrest warrant
Apparently, the first warrant was issued in Mombasa while the second one was from Nairobi. The report shows the Mombasa case involves escape from lawful custody, for which an arrest warrant was issued and was never cancelled.
"He was arrested in Nairobi and taken to Kamiti Maximum Prison where he was released on appeal, but he never appeared in Mombasa to answer to the warrant that had been issued," the report reads in part.
Kibera Chief Magistrate Ms Catherine Mwangi had issued a warrant against a person with the same names as Mbuvi.
The court issued a warrant of arrest against a Mr Gidion Kioko Mbuvi for jumping bail in a Sh18 million fraud case in 2005, court records show.
Police have since contacted the complainant in the fraud case, who is out of the country and said he is ready to come back to give evidence. The case was then reported to Parklands police station.
Ms Mwangi issued the warrant on August 4, 2005 after a request by the prosecution.
Then, Mr Mbuvi appeared in court charged with forgery and applied for bail. He was freed on Sh100,000 bond, surety of the same amount and production of a contact person.
But when he failed to appear in court, the prosecution asked for the warrant, which appears to still be in force.
Mbuvi had been accused, together with others not in court, of obtaining blankets and fabrics using a forged Local Purchase Order allegedly issued by a Government ministry.
He denied three charges of forgery, uttering a false document and obtaining goods by pretences.
‘Sonko’, who the police say is the same as Mbuvi came into the limelight after he defeated ODM’s Reuben Ndolo, and Party of National Unity’s Dick Wathika in a by-election in Nairobi’s Makadara Constituency.
