Kenya the real winner

By Standard Reporter

Former President Moi says the winner in today’s referendum vote should be the nation.

Moi also says voters should be allowed to decide on their own without intimidation.

"The people must be given room to exercise their will without meddling, undue influence or intimidation of any kind. The real winner must be our country and our people," he said in a statement released by his Press Secretary, Mr Lee Njiru, yesterday.

He explained that constitution making is not about winning and losing, but about deciding a good future for the country.

He said proposals amounting to experimentation on governance could threaten the future of the nation and as former president he could not keep quiet.

"We have come so far, peacefully and as a united nation, because of this foundation, which rests on democratic pillars and respect for each others’ divergent opinions while co-existing as one large family," he said.

He said Kenyans need a constitution that caters for the interest of the present and the future generation.

Future generations

He asked Kenyans to look back at the founding fathers of the nation and "remember their struggle was to grant the people liberty, freedom, self-determination and justice."

He said as a statesman with more than five decades of experience, half of which he led the nation; he was concerned with the welfare of present and future generations.

"Throughout my political career I have stood for peace, stability and national harmony. I have also learnt selflessness, honesty and perseverance are essential values in any leader no matter the challenges," he said.

He said he is opposed to the Proposed Constitution because of proposals he feels would work against the wellbeing of the nation.
