OJIENDA ON TJRC

Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) Commissioner Tom Ojienda, has come out in defense of the commission, saying the woes facing its chair are individual and the entire commission should not be held accountable.

Ojienda says it would be unfair to disband the entire commission, as this would deal a major blow in the implementation of its mandate of which it has made several strides.

The Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission has been suffering a credibility crisis with calls for the disbandment of the entire commission amid allegations of infighting following the woes facing the commission's chairman Bethuel Kiplagat.

Calls for Kiplagat's resignation have been coming in fast and hard following allegations that he might have been implicated in human rights abuses during his tenure as a senior government official during the reign of former president Daniel Moi.

The commission has already petitioned Chief Justice Evan Gicheru to suspend the chairman until he is exonerated from the allegations amid fears that the commission might not be perceived to be impartial and unbiased if he remains at the helm.

In recent days calls have been rife to have the remaining seven commissioners sent packing after the former vice chair Betty Murungi resigned.

Justice and constitutional affairs minister Mutula Kilonzo has alao called for the disbandment of the commission unless it puts its house in order.

Members of parliament have also threatened to move a motion of no confidence on the commission with calls for the government to stop allocating money to the commission until it sorts out its mess.

Trouble started following allegations that Kiplagat was implicated in irregular acquisition of land, the murder of former foreign affairs minister Robert Ouko and the Wagalla massacre.

The commission was formed in August last year to look into past injustices and propose remedies for them.
