...Speaker's Kamukunji cancelled ahead of debate<br /><br />The much publicized Speaker's Kamukunji expected to take place Tuesday morning to solidify resolutions reached at the MPs' consensus building retreat on the proposed constitution failed to take off. <br /><br />The last minute cancellation of the informal meeting was attributed to the failure by the legislators to hammer out a deal on the contentious issues in the just concluded four day retreat at the Kenya Institute of Administration. <br /><br />The lawmakers Monday left the retreat empty handed after the PNU and ODM stuck to their hard line positions on the proposed constitution. <br /><br />President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga had been invited to the informal meeting to whip their troops to reach a final consensus ahead of debate on the proposed constitution Tuesday afternoon. <br /><br />The divisions among the political class have threatened to scuttle the constitution review process which has reached the home stretch.<br /><br />Legislators from both PNU and ODM failed to agree on devolution and representation chapters <br /><br /><br />The MPs now have only six days left for debate on the draft in the House.<br /><br />But the draft experts have assured that the law review process will continue even if the lawmakers do not agree. <br /><br />The experts said the MPs can amend the draft and take it back to the Committee of Experts after raising two thirds majority in parliament. <br /><br />However if they disagree the experts can go ahead and forward the proposed draft to the Attorney General.MEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15797853630569534482noreply@blogger.com
