MEMBERS of ODM who defected during the 2013 general election are free to rejoin the party, national chairman John Mbadi has said.
Speaking on a radio station talk show yesterday, he said potential returnees should show commitment beyond the upcoming grassroots elections.
“There are those leaders who expressed their dissatisfaction with the last party nominations and defected to other political parties but have shown their interest in coming back,” Mbadi said.
“They are most welcome, but they should not just come back for the sake of vying for the party positions.”
Mbadi, who is also the Suba MP, said the defectors will be vetted thoroughly before they are allowed to contest for any seat “since some might be fighting the party”.
He told party supporters the elections will be carried out by the National Elections Board, an independent body.
Several ODM candidates condemned the party’s nominations in 2013 ahead of the general election and defected to other parties.
Some ended up with victory over the candidates which the party favoured even in ODM strongholds.
“We agreed for one to vie for any position, he or she must have joined the party 12 months before the elections,” Mbadi said.
“However, there have been complaints raised and we will review the stand.”
NEB chairperson Judith Pareno on Monday announced the party elections will take place August 29-September 4.
