Cord leader Raila Odinga has asked voters in North Ugenya not to disappoint him and vote for the ODM candidate in the ward’s by-election.
Mr Odinga Thursday said he was confident Orange party candidate Shaban Omar will win the August 17 election.
“I would like to urge all the Ugenya voters not to disappoint me in the coming polls since they are strong ODM supporters,” said Mr Odinga during an interview on a local radio station.
The North Ugenya seat fell vacant following the death of Mr Benson Omondi in March. Mr Omondi died while he was being treated at a Kisumu hospital.
Two other candidates, Mr Stephen Mwanga of the Jubilee Alliance Party, and Mr Lazarus Otieno of Kanu are in the race for the seat.
Mr Mwanga unsuccessfully contested against Siaya Senator James Orengo in the Ugenya elections in 2007.
The candidates are traversing the ward soliciting for votes.
Thursday, Mr Odinga said ODM is still the most popular party in the country.
He said although ODM was part of the Cord coalition, he would only campaign for his party’s candidate.
“As the ODM leader, I will not abandon my party’s candidate and campaign for a candidate from another political party,” said Mr Odinga.
The Orange party leader also accused the other candidates in the North Ugenya ward race of pretending to be ODM supporters only to jump ship to other parties after failing to clinch the party nomination.
“We will embarrass the Jubilee Alliance Party by winning the North Ugenya by-election with a landslide,” he said.
