A lorry belonging to Lamu West MP Julius Ndegwa has been impounded over ferrying 390 stones of bhang and 24 sachets of heroin.
The lorry, which was transporting 200 bags of cement, was intercepted at a roadblock in Witu at around 9 am on Wednesday, said a police chief who did not want to be named.
It was heading from Mombasa to Lamu when police flagged it down for a search, he said, adding that the drugs do not belong to Ndegwa.
The bhang's estimated street value is Sh175,000.
Passenger Joseph Mbugua, suspected to be the owner of the drugs, driver Martin Njuguna and loader Kahuki Kanyinge were arrested, the source said.
They are being held at Mpeketoni police station before they are charged at Lamu law courts.
Ndegwa called for thorough investigations and the prosecution of the three saying the incident brought him into disrepute as a leader and businessman.
“They should face the law. Being a leader who has been at the forefront of the fight against drugs, it’s unfortunate that my vehicle is involved in such a mess," he told the Star on phone on Wednesday.
"That is a vehicle that is to be hired for legal businesses, not criminal work. Let them be charged so that others can learn.”
The MP is facing abuse of office charges concerning the irregular withdrawal of Sh1.6 million from the CDF account.
He denied colluding with four others to embezzle the funds, allocated to the construction of a cattle dip in Witu, between July 1 and October 10, 2013.
He said he is confident his innocence will be proven.
