Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale has urged the government to join his fight against individuals who led to the collapse of Mumias Sugar Company.
Speaking in reference to his court battle with Kidero, Khalwale said that he has begun a war against those who brought the sugar miller to its knees, adding that he will not relent in his pursuit.
Khalwale further confirmed his stand in the opposition saying he cannot join the government because he is supposed to keep it in check.
“The opposition of yesterday is the government of today and the opposition of today is the government of tomorrow. I cannot join Jubilee because it is the government of today,” said Khalwale.
He expressed his gratitude to Deputy President William Ruto for visiting the region, saying he is aware that the visit is not aimed at pulling Luhyas to Jubilee but part of its work as government.
Khalwale, however, called for dialogue between the government and leaders from the region over the Mumias Sugar issue saying the matter is sensitive.
“The issue of Mumias is so complex. If the government does not listen to us, they will enter deals that will spell doom for Mumias Sugar Company.”
He warned that he would mobilise the region to block roads and prevent exportation of milk to Uganda if the sugar deal proves detrimental for Mumias Sugar Company.
Dialogue over sugar issue
“If I am ignored and sugar from Uganda kills Mumias Sugar Company and milk from Kenya goes to Uganda I will mobilise all Luhyas to block the road and ensure no milk goes to Uganda.”
On his part, Mumias East MP said he was forced to quit CORD for Jubilee because of the presence of Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero in the party.
“I left CORD because the person who led to the financial problems in Mumias Sugar Company is a member,” he said.
Washiali called on Khalwale to join him in Jubilee saying the government is on track to revive the ailing sugar miller.
“Jubilee Government has given Mumias Sugar Company Sh1.77 billion in total since coming to power. It is because of this that I am in government and I would urge my brother Khalwale to join us,” he said.
The leaders were speaking during a fundraiser at St Paul’s Ejinja Catholic Church in Matungu Constituency.
Deputy President William Ruto, Senate majority leader Kithure Kindiki, leader of majority in the National Assembly Adan Duale, MPs David Were (Matungu), Bernard Shinali (Okolomani) and Boniface Otsyula(Bumula) were present.
