Four family members died near Kibunja shopping center along Nakuru-Eldoret highway after a trailer rammed into their motorbike killing them on spot.
The victims - a father, mother and their two daughters - were travelling from Jogoo to Kibunja when the overtaking trailer ran into them.
The driver failed to stop but was intercepted and arrested at Salgaa.
Salgaa traffic commander Walter Kiptala warned trailer drivers, who are notorious for causing accidents on the highway, to respect traffic rules or face prosecution.
"Drivers and all road users should always respect the traffic rules so as to save lives of innocent people. You don’t have to do so only when you see a traffic officer," he said.
He said the driver who caused the accident is being held at Salgaa police station and will be taken to court as soon as investigations are complete.
Witness and bodaboda operators faulted the traffic officers for laxity, claiming the accident could have been prevented had the rider been stopped at Total road block for carrying excess passengers.
They said trailer drivers disregard other road users and overtake recklessly.
The deceased were taken to Molo District Hospital Mortuary and the motorcycle towed to Molo police station.
