FIVE people died and several others were injured in an accident at Ragengni Market centre on the Ndori-Luanda Kotieno road in Rarieda, Siaya county.
A public service vehicle that was ferrying passengers 14 passengers from Kisumu to Luanda Kotieno veered off the road before rolling several times on Saturday night.
A witness said the 14-seater Nissan was trying to avoid a boda boda operator, who abruptly joined the highway from the side of the road.
The boda boda operator sped away after the accident.
Siaya director of Health Samuel Owino said the passengers with minor injuries were taken to various hospitals in the area, while four in critical condition were referred to the County Referral Hospital.
Area OCPD Johanna Chebii said the five bodies were taken to Madiany Subcounty Mortuary.
He asked motorcyclists to be cautious when joining the Ndori-Luanda Kotieno road as it has a many bends and sharp corners.
He said all motorcyclists should be trained and licensed to prevent accidents caused by reckless riding.
