Female APs took to the streets of Kakamega town on Monday, in a protest against elections from which their representative was allegedly barred.
The officers, under the Kenya Association of Women in Policing, claimed Maureen Lidava, who sought to represent the Nyanza/ Western region was wrongfully locked out.
Following the countrywide poll, largely boycotted in Western and Nairobi, they marched across the town in their uniforms, waving placards saying 'No Maureen, No Voting', 'No Lidava, No Voting'.
But officials of the election held earlier in the day, and tallied at Police Pavilion in Nairobi, said Lidava did not meet the deadline for submitting papers.
Airport CID commander Judy Jebet was named chairperson, and Lucy Nduati secretary.
Priscah Mulinge was elected vice secretary, Janet Silakwa treasurer, Fatuma Hadi Nairobi region representative and Linda Okello Central/Eastern region representative.
Other elected representatives were Laura David (Rift Valley), Cecilia Nderitu (Nyanza/Western ) and Teresiah Mutayu (Coast and North Eastern).
Jebet, who will be in office for two years, said she will be the voice of women in policing, improve members' profiles and meet all objectives.
“We are under the National Police Service and there will be no favouritism. Let us work together in ensuring our issues are addressed as we serve the public,” she said.
The law allows officers to form such associations, which are entirely independent of any trade union under Labour Institutions Act 2007.
The association is formed in accordance with part IX of National Police Service Act 2011 to champion the rights of women in policing.
Its mandates are;
a) To bring to the notice of the Inspector General, Commission and Cabinet Secretary, any matters affecting the general welfare of women in the service.
b) To negotiate and report for action on behalf of the members in respect to:
i) Any grievance.
ii) The terms and conditions of employment.
iii) Any other matter concerning female police officers.
c) To raise awareness and understanding of issues affecting women within the National Police Service.
d) To facilitate and contribute to discussions on issues of concern to all officers, and providing a female perspective whenever possible.
e) To develop a network of professional and social contacts between officers, nationally and internationally.
f) To facilitate the sharing of information on issues affecting the National Police Service, particularly women.
g) To contribute to the continuous, professional development of all members.
h) To provide mentorship for female police officers.
i) To advocate for equal opportunities for female police officers within the service.
j) To do everything that generally promotes the attainment of the Association’s objectives.
The objectives are on condition that they will not be construed to include the provision of professional or legal advice relating to issues that could result in disciplinary or judicial proceedings.
