President Uhuru Kenyatta will not respond to demands for a referendum spearheaded by the Cord Coalition. State House confirmed yesterday that Uhuru would not wade into the debate saying the President's work is only to “govern the country”.
“Certainly the president would be saying nothing about the calls for referendum,” State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu insisted. “The President is not in a position to enter that debate.”
However, he said that members of the Jubilee Coalition led by Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki and his National Assembly counterpart Aden Duale were free to respond.
The Jubilee Government has remained tight lipped on the demand for a plebiscite announced by Opposition Leaders Raila Odinga, Moses Wetangula amd Kalonzo Musyoka at the Saba Saba rally on Monday.
The trio said that they would convene an all-inclusive National Referendum Committee (NRC) for the purpose of preparing the people of Kenya for a national referendum on the critical challenges facing our Nation.
“The mandate the National Referendum Committee to ensure the maximum participation of the people of Kenya in the referendum at the County, Sub-County and Ward levels all over Kenya; in formulating the referendum question(s), collecting and collating one million signatures to initiate the referendum,” their resolutions read in part.
On Tuesday, Duale and Kindiki called off a press conference to respond to Cord, in a strategy believed to be aimed at removing the referendum issue from public discourse.
The Presidents new tactic came even as it emerged that hewill pitch tent in Kakamega, another opposition stronghold over the weekend. According to his schedule, Uhuru would be in Kakamega on Friday evening where he would have Iftar dinner with Muslims community. He is expected to leave the region on Saturday.
