Former planning minister and Karachuonyo MP Dr Adhu Awiti died on Tuesday at Avenue Hospital in Kisumu while undergoing treatment.
Dr Awiti died at around 4:30pm, according to a member of his family.
He served as a minister in President Daniel arap Moi's government and was one of the brains behind the merger between the National Development Party (NDP) and Kanu in 2001.
Cord leader Raila Odinga has sent his condolences to the family of the late politician.
"On behalf of my family, friends and the Orange Democratic Movement and CORD Coalition, I wish to pass sincere condolences to family and friends of Dr Paul Adhu Awiti, who passed on today (Tuesday) after a prolonged battle with cancer.
"Dr Awiti was a staunch believer in the possibility of a better, more equal, just, fair and free Kenya. He worked relentlessly for it," Mr Odinga said in a statement to newsrooms.
