BUDALANG'I MP Ababu Namwamba has defended his absence at the Cord Saba Saba rally at Uhuru Park in Nairobi on Monday.
Cord governors Evans Kidero (Nairobi), Alfred Mutua (Machakos) and Hassan Joho (Mombasa) also skipped the rally. Ababu said his being in Kakamega when the rally was on in Nairobi did not mean that Cord is divided.
He said his commitment to his party ODM and the Cord coalition is not in doubt.
“Our being here should not be misconstrued in any way by the nay sayers to mean that there is a division in the coalition. My support from my party leader Raila Odinga is 100 per cent and I believe he is happy that I'm here leading from the front,” Ababu said.
Ababu, who chairs the Parliamentary Accounts Committee, and Cord committee members Kyengo Maweu (Kangundo) Silvance Osele (Kasipul Kabondo) and Nyamira women's representative Alice Nyanchoka were in Kakamega on Monday to probe a lease between the judiciary and the Agriculture Finance Corporation.
He said cleaning up any perceived and real corruption in the judiciary is at the very heart of the fight against corruption.
“This is a calling that is very close to the core agenda by Cord coalition and as they say, there are many ways to skin a rat,” Ababu said.
"We are here pursuing a course, which we believe dovetails and connects very well with the Cord agenda of fighting corruption."
Ababu said the committee was investigating the haphazard expenditure of Sh 2.6 billion by the Auditor General in leasing office space in three counties.
He said the fight against corruption can die a natural death if the judiciary gets involved in the fight .
