MAINA NJENGA DENIES STABBING

Tuesday, July 23, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY KAMORE MAINA
FORMER Mungiki leader Maina Njenga yesterday denied that he had been stabbed in the side by a church member on Sunday, July 14.
Njenga is the former head of the proscribed Mungiki organisation but after his release from prison in 2009, he was born again and set up the Hope International Ministries church.
He was allegedly stabbed at his Kitengela farm where he has built a palatial home. The 1,000 acres was allegedly bequeathed to the Mungiki sect by a benefactor.
Njenga met church members on July 14 and the issue was raised of how the former Mungiki assets should be shared out. The former Mungiki members, now church members, wanted an assurance that they will continue receiving financial and material support after giving up extortion and protection rackets.
There was a heated discussion and an irate former Mungiki leader pulled out a knife and allegedly stabbed Njenga on the right side of the abdomen.
The ex-Mungiki members also wanted to know the status of another Kitengela farm bequeathed to them by a former top government official. The farm, estimated to be thousands of acres, was supposed to be sub-divided and given to members.
The ex-Mungiki feel they partly own the property since it was acquired through their various protection and extortion rackets before, during and after Njenga's arrest in 2006 and subsequent release in 2009.
Yesterday, Njenga denied the incident and claimed there were no differences between him and his followers. He denied that any former Mungiki members had demanded a share of his 1,000 acre farm as he had bought it himself.
He dismissed reports that he had been injured or gone into hiding. "That is propaganda. I am okay and no one has attacked me," Njenga said last night.
Multiple sources from the former Mungiki sect however confirmed that Njenga was "recuperating" at an unknown place after the incident. Yesterday, Njenga's brother, John Njoroge, insisted that Njenga was alright and was at his home in Karen.
"He even participated in a crusade at Isinya last Sunday," Njoroge said. He added that Njenga would soon hold a press conference to reassure the public that he was safe.
There was apparently a prayer service at Njenga's Kitengela home in Isinya on Sunday. It doubled as a thanksgiving service for Njenga's new wife.
The body of Virginia Nyakio, Njenga's first wife, was dumped in Gakoe forest in Gatundu in 2008 after she had been shot. She and her driver were ambushed as they drove along Lang'ata road.
The alleged attack comes amid reports by the National Intelligence Service that Mungiki has been regrouping in parts of Central Province and Nairobi.
Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo told the Star that police had declared war on the resurgent Mungiki, especially in President Uhuru Kenyatta's home town of Gatundu.
Officers from elite police Flying Squad have been carrying out a sustained operation to eliminate suspected Mungiki from Gatundu and other parts of central Kenya following a spate of robberies, murders, arson, and extortion racket.
Kimaiyo told the Star that the police were "on top of things” and that the ongoing crackdown against Mungiki was part of a countrywide strategy to eliminate armed criminal gangs including in Mombasa, Garissa and Bungoma.
