More than 100 Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) members in Baringo county have defected to the rival Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) in the past three weeks.
The teachers are said to have been angered by their national office move to call off their strike without consulting them.
According to Knut Baringo branch chairman Joshua Cheptarus, the secondary teachers were visiting their offices to fill membership forms.
Fulfil demands
“Our facilities are almost overstretched as we are overwhelmed by the high number of teachers seeking our membership. We have no option but to fulfil their demands,” Mr Cheptarus told the Nation.
Kuppet officials in the area led by branch chairman David Kibet and treasurer Eric Kiprotich acknowledged that some of their members had defected but urged them to be patient.
“Moving to other unions is not the best solution. We urge our members to be patient as we are ready to face the national office head on over this matter,” Mr Kibet said. Knut officials in the county backed the national office’s decision to continue the strike.
