TJRC boss resigns

TJRC boss resigns to join Lands Commission
Tuesday, June 18, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY NZAU MUSAU
TRUTH, Justice and Reconciliation Commission CEO Tom Chavangi has quit.
Chavangi resigned yesterday to take up his new posting as the CEO of the National Lands Commission.
He has served as the commission's CEO since September last year when Patricia Nyaundi, his predecessor resigned to pursue academic interests in Canada.
Nyaundi is now working with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.
Before the September 2012 appointment, Chavangi had been the director of legal affairs at the commission from July 2010.
Chavangi leaves the commission one and half months to its dissolution.
He also leaves one month after the commission handed its final report to President Uhuru.
“His move is a big plus for the commission actually. The lands commission will implement most of our recommendations on historical injustices and he understands the issues fully having been part of our team,” outgoing Commissioner Tom Ojienda told the Star.
Sources said Chavangi’s appointment as the Lands Commission will take effect immediately.
The commission’s director of civic education and outreach Elijah Letangule will act as the CEO until the August 3 dissolution of the commission.
Chavangi steered the commission in its most turbulent times- the grand return of chairman Bethuel Kiplagat, the bid for third-time extension, report writing stage and the delayed presentation of the report to the president.
