NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 20 – President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday morning presided over his first national prayer breakfast with an assurance that the Government was taking measures to reduce the cost of living.
Speaking during the event, President Kenyatta said that his government will ensure that basic necessities are affordable to all Kenyans.
The Head of State expressed the efforts being undertaken to transform the country into a middle income economy where all Kenyans enjoy a high standard of living.
“As a government, we are indeed committed to transforming our country into a middle income economy where all our people can enjoy a high standard of living. As we pursue this goal, I assure Kenyans that my government is taking all measures to reduce the cost of living and ensure that the cost of basic necessities is affordable,” he said.
At the same time, he appealed to all Kenyans not to lose sight of the big picture in the course of championing individual and group interests.
“I call upon all leaders at the National and County levels to focus on practical ways of improving the lives of people and especially addressing the plight of the needy and vulnerable members of our society. Let us pray for and focus on helping the unemployed youth, those living in poverty and all vulnerable members of the society,” he said.
He further emphasised the need for all leaders to be selfless and urged them to instead to unite and focus on finding practical solutions to pressing problems.
He urged leaders both at the national and county levels to focus on ways of addressing the plight of the needy and vulnerable.
The head of state also appealed to leaders not to politicize challenges facing the implementation of the constitution.
“Let us all pray for God’s guidance in balancing the competing demands in our economy and here I am appealing to all Kenyans not to loose sight of the big picture in the course of championing individual and group interests,” he said.
“We must remember that our sectoral demands in our counties, interest groups, trade unions and so on have a direct impact on other sectors of our country as well.”
He said they should focus on improving the lives of Kenyans.
“Let us carefully assess the effects of our demands on other sectors of our national endeavour and the over all growth prospect of our economy. With the true Christian love and spirit, let us reflect on the well being of one another and let us be each other’s keepers. We can set apart our diversities ad move forward as a nation,” he stated.
His sentiments were echoed by Deputy President William Ruto who stressed the need for all Kenyans to unite regardless of race or colour.
“As we go forward beyond our political divide, beyond the races and communities we come from, it is our desire that God puts us together so that we can work together for the glory of God and for the success of our country,” he said.
President Kenyatta further assured Kenyans that his Government is determined to deal with any internal and external threats to peace and security.
“In recent times, we have been faced with security challenges which remain a matter of great concern to my Government,” he said.
He called on Kenyans to join hands in ensuring that this year marks a new beginning for the country, a new beginning of peace and prosperity and a new beginning of hope and opportunity for all.
