The fight for the control of ODM intensified on Sunday with the party’s youth wing throwing its weight behind former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s aide, Caesar Asiyo to be its executive director.
This follows the nomination of Ms Janet Ongera who was the party’s executive director to the Senate. The fight is informed by the huge resources the party is expected to control.
Under the Political Party’s Act, ODM is to get close to Sh700 million from the government in the next financial year due to the seats it garnered in the March 4 elections.
On Sunday, ODM’s Young Democrats League addressed a press conference in Karen Nairobi, where its officials declared their support for Mr Asiyo.
Some 43 people applied for the ODM executive director’s post, in an exercise conducted by KPMG consultancy firm.
Loyal member
Among those said to have sought the post are former ODM deputy chief whip Magerer Langat, ex-National Social Security Fund boss Naftali Mogere, politicians Ken Butiko, Mr John Kiema, Nabii Nabwera, Beth Syengo and Monica Amolo.
A panel of MPs led by Butere’s Andrew Toboso is to interview the shortlisted candidates.
On Sunday, the Orange Young Democrats League officials led by John Ketora, Bob Njagi and Sheila Kosgei said they wanted Mr Asiyo to be ODM’s executive director because he had been a loyal member of the party for long.
Mr Asiyo is also favoured for the seat “since he is a technocrat, manager and is youthful.”
“The country is currently yearning for youthful leadership. Mr Asiyo has been with ODM for years. He subscribes to the ideal and manifesto of the party,” Mr Ketora said. The officials said Mr Asiyo did not harbour “political ambitions”.
