Kethi Kilonzo in race to replace father, says Kalonzo

By PAUL MUTUA
MAKUENI, KENYA: Kethi Kilonzo has confirmed she will contest the Makueni senatorial seat left vacant after the demise of his father, Mutula Kilonzo.
Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, speaking to The Standard on Saturday, on Thursday, said he would accompany Kethi to Wote town in Makueni on Monday to deliver the good news to the electorate.
The former Vice-President said that Kethi’s declaration would be a storm to the residents who were ready to support her bid. Amid wild cheers, the WDM party leader said the good news about Kethi would end speculation and anxiety among the electorate who had pressured her to throw her hat in the ring for the race.
He said Kethi had a wide appeal to go for the seat left vacant by her father who died on April 27.
Kalonzo spoke in Machakos town after paying the Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua a courtesy call on Thursday.
Kalonzo warned the Makueni people against supporting Jubilee Alliance candidate in July 22 by-election.
“We have some friends lining up for the seat, but they are politically wobbling, with one leg in the Wiper party and the other in the Jubilee Alliance Coalition. The Makueni electorate should reject such staggering leaders at the ballot,” the ex-VP said.
The Wiper Democratic Movement party leader said he will not retire from politics soon. Kalonzo said that he would soldier on until he accomplished the ultimate goal.
He scoffed at a section of political wing clamouring for his retirement, saying the naysayers wanted to mutilate his political career at immaturity. Without elaborating, the former Vice President said at age 60, he was more re-energised and those telling him to quit politics were cynical.
“My ultimate duty is to strengthen the Wiper party and at the large scale the Cord affiliate parties to make the force a formidable unit ahead of the next General Election,” Kalonzo said.
On devolution, the Wiper leader said the Cord Alliance stood for a full implementation of the Constitution.
He warned that any attempts to derail the devolution spirit stood rejected by Kenyans.
