MAKUENI, Kenya, Jun 24 – Putting to bed any doubts, Kethi Kilonzo came out clearly on Monday to announce that she will defend her late father, Mutula Kilonzo’s Senate seat on a Wiper party ticket.
Flanked by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka at a rally in Wote, Makueni County, Kethi said that while she might be inexperienced in the arena of politics, her legal experience would stand her in good stead in the Senate.
“Today I have enrolled into the nursery school of politics,” Kethi said to laughter, “and this is the first time I’ve had the honour of addressing such a large crowd but I can assure you that I’m not just a lawyer, I am a very good lawyer.”
Kethi went on to try and convince Makueni residents that she would make her late father proud by representing their interests as well as those of the 46 other counties to the best of her ability.
“Kivutha Kibwana, the Governor of Makueni, was my lecturer at the University of Nairobi, and he gave me an A. Should Makueni residents give me this seat they too will get an A. The residents of Siaya county will get an A, the residents of Baringo will get an A as will Kenya as a whole,” she said.
Kethi added that she would fight for the entrenchment of devolution as the current Constitution was voted in when her late father was the Minister for Justice.
“There are 47 governments and we have our own government here in Makueni. Let no one lie to you. You are looking at your government right now,” she said motioning towards Kibwana.
As is expected from many a politician on the campaign trail, Kethi promised a better Makueni will be the result of her election into office.
“I’m ready to work with the likes of (Senator James) Orengo and (Senator David) Musila in the crafting of laws that will bring development to Makueni. We have enough sky scrapers in Nairobi. We want them here,” she said.
As she wound up her first public address as a political aspirant, Kethi reiterated that while she may not have much political experience, she was the best man for the job.
“I am not a politician and I do not intend to play politics. We’ve had enough politics. It is time for development. It’s time for us to help ourselves. The days we held out an open palm at the Central government are over. It’s time for devolution.”
In the event that Kethi is voted into the Senate following the July 22 by-election, she will be the first elected female Senator in Kenya’s history.
