Corridors of Power

Thursday, June 20, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
MPs are not leaving any opportunity to get an extra coin pass by even in circumstances when one does not deserve any pay. After they cajoled the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to remove the ceiling on the number of committee meetings an MP can attend in a week, some law makers are now ensuring their signatures appear in attendance list of each and every meeting of the committees they belong to. Some of them are even colluding with their committee chairmen so that no meeting is closed before one appends his or her signature. For instance, the chairman of one of the departmental committee was heard calling on phone one of the lawmakers urging him to “come quickly and sign this thing even if you did not attend.”  An MP earns a Sh 5000 allowance per meeting as long a signature has been appended that he or she attended the meeting.

A witness who watched as a woman was knocked down by a mkokoteni - before the crew went on without even checking if she was hurt - wants governor Evans Kidero to reign in on the hand cart pushers and end their impunity.
