A theory, which is fast gaining traction, has emerged that senior members of the CORD fraternity with longstanding and deep seated hatred for Raila Odinga may have deliberately set him up for a spectacular fall at the Supreme Court.
The members in suspicion include top lawyer James Orengo, who run for the Presidency in 2002. Before he swallowed his pride and joined Raila's cheerleading squad in 2007 Orengo was a rabid and bitter critic of the Luo supremo.
Suspicion is also focusing on the urbane and sophisticated Dalmas Otieno, who has already tendered his Ministerial resignation contrary to Raila's express directive.
In the Wiper wing of the alliance, Mutula Kilonzo has similarly tendered his resignation, in effect sabotaging Anyang Nyong'o's High Court petition on the same. Months to the General Election, Mutula was a staunch ally of President Mwai Kibaki.
Critics wonder how the likes of Mutula and Orengo could allow Raila's lawyer George Oraro to make elementary mistakes at the Supreme Court, including filing affidavits without asking leave of the court. The only explanation, they say, is because they rigged it to fail in the first instance.
Raila’s diehards including Mr Nyong'o and Otieno Kajwang have started asking questions about the loyalty in particular of Orengo, who is married to a senior lawyer from Meru.
In the event that Raila implodes, as is looking increasingly likely, Orengo is expected to be the chief beneficiary and inheritor of the Luo Nation.
The rise of Orengo will mark the end of the Odinga dynasty as the family is bereft of a charismatic scion who could take over. Raila will be 73 during the next election cycle in 2017.
