Wednesday March 20, 2013 - Members of Parliament elect and the Senators elect would have to wait a little longer than anticipated before being sworn in following the controversies surrounding the list of nominees.
Sources close to the Parliament indicate that the MP’s and Senator cannot be sworn in without their counterparts who are to be nominated by political parties.
The nomination lists saga came into light after it was clear that the political parties did not take into consideration the special interest groups and gender parity as provided for in the constitution while coming up with the list of names for nomination, something that forced the Gender Commission to move to court to block the lists thereby stalling the swearing in process.
Despite the efforts by political parties to have the IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan reverse the lists to accommodate the losers in the elections, the electoral body maintained that it could not alter the list.
Constitutionally, President Kibaki is required to convene the first Parliament sitting within 30 days after the General Election where the MP’s and Senators will be sworn in and proceed to elect the Speaker.
