Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday said the Supreme Court had a chance to shape the country’s history depending on how it handled the presidential petition before it.
At the same time, the VP said he supports Prime Minister Raila Odinga in pursuing justice at the courts, saying he was disappointed that certain quarters had decided to tamper with the electoral process.
“It pains my heart to know what happened. Kenyans who are responsible for this will form a sad chapter in the country’s history,” he said.
Mr Musyoka said that depending on the decision by the Supreme Court, Kenya could be placed ahead of the pact in terms of upholding democracy.
He warned that if the court slipped on its role of upholding justice, then, the history of the country would not be the same again.
He said the country had been very peaceful and asked Kenyans to pray and wait for the ruling.
Mr Musyoka said that the Cord Alliance would abide by the decision of the court on the petition as it would be final with no course for appeal.
The VP postulated that Cord could end up in the opposition benches if the decision was made against them, saying the country was in need of a strong opposition to check government excesses.
He said the alliance, which had filed a petition challenging the election of President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta, was optimistic of winning the case, saying the country was more important than individuals and that justice had to be done in the interests of the nation.
Mr Musyoka said if the court’s decision did not favour them, he would still be somewhere working hard for this country as everyone is called upon to contribute to its development.
All action would be on the Supreme Court in the coming days. When the hearing starts, Kenyans will know the truth on what happened in the elections.
“We will be in it for the long-haul and in the end Kenyans will know the truth and justice would have been served,” said the VP regarding the petition filed on Saturday at the Supreme Court.
At the same time, Mr Musyoka said he was happy with the progress the country had made, especially with the passage of a Constitution that provides a mechanism for the courts to arbitrate over elections, where a party feels aggrieved with the way they are conducted.
He stressed the need to nurture peace and stability, which would make the country a beacon of democracy for the continent and beyond.
