Ruto delivers votes to Jubilee alliance

By Vincent Bartoo
United Republican Party ( URP) leader William Ruto delivered massive votes to Jubilee Alliance.
In North Rift, Jubilee presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta got 90 per cent of votes cast.
His main opponent CORD presidential aspirant Raila Odinga performed dismally in the region getting not more than 10 per cent of votes cast.
Ruto delivered majority seats, which means Jubilee will have majority representation from the region.
Critics of Uhuru’s presidential bid had forecast that he would not fair well in the region. They based their argument on differences between Ruto and Uhuru’s supporters based on the 2007 General Election that are yet to be resolved. But Ruto’s groundwork in the North Rift for an Uhuru presidency paid off with many residents voting for him.
He held meetings with elders, and massive rallies in the region, with two main ones in Eldoret’s 64 Stadium and Kapkatet Stadium in Kericho to drive the point home.
According to the former Eldoret North MP, his alliance with Uhuru provided the best medicine to heal the rifts between their supporters.
However, opponents of the alliance claimed it was a marriage of convenience owing to the cases they jointly face at International Criminal Court.
Jubilee, through URP and TNA swept majority of seats in the North Rift in results announced for president, governor, senators, MPs, women and county representatives.
Jubilee took 23 MPs seats out of 31 slots in counties in the region.
The counties include Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Elgeyo/Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, and Turkana.
URP took all seats in Uasin Gishu that include Soy, Turbo, Ainabkoi, Moiben, Kapsaret, and Kesses.
The party repeated the same feat in Elgeyo/Marakwet bagging Keiyo North, Keiyo South, Marakwet West and Marakwet East.
URP emerged the dominant party in the region owing to an understanding between Uhuru and Ruto that each party fields candidates in their strongholds.
In some areas in North Rift, other parties won seats.
Ford-Kenya and ODM under the CORD alliance took two MPs seats each, while New Ford-Kenya, TNA and Kanu bagging one each.
majority seats
One of the seats went to independent candidate Wesley Korir, an athlete who won in Cherangany constituency seat, beating URP’s Joshua Kuttuny.
Three out of the six governors in the North Rift are from URP.
URP bagged Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo/Marakwet governor seats, while Ford-Kenya and ODM in CORD got Trans Nzoia and Turkana seats.
West Pokot seat went to Kanu, which also bagged the county Senate.
URP took three Senate seats namely Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo/Marakwet, while Turkana and Trans Nzoia went to Ford-Kenya.
As for women representatives, URP won five of six seats in the North Rift.
The party will also have control of the county governments after it won majority of county representative seats.
