Thursday, the 7th of March 2013 - As Kenya braces for what could turn out to be the most momentous Friday morning in the nation’s 50 year history, all indications from the IEBC’s central tallying station at Bomas seem to suggest that the country will be going for a run-off election next month.
After three days of results showing that the Presidential race is for the Jubilee alliance’s Uhuru Kenyatta to lose, the latest figures show CORD’s Raila Odinga cutting down Uhuru’s lead to just three percentage points.
This is how the results stood at the time of posting:
Uhuru - 3,522,127 (48.7%)
Raila - 3,299,391 (45.6%)
So far the IEBC commissioners have released the official results from 174 of the country’s 291 electoral constituencies. This means that the Presidential race could go either way depending on who between Uhuru and Raila has the greater sway in the undeclared constituencies.
The Kenyan constitution requires the winner of the Presidential election to get more than 50% of the votes cast. If none of the candidates manages this then Kenya will have to decide between the top two candidates on April 5.
More updates to follow.
