Kiambu, Kenya: Two police officers have been arrested in connection with the office raid in Ruiru in which gangsters stole a firearm and 20 Biometric Voter Registration kits.
Police said the officers were aiding with investigation into the Friday night incident involving an unknown number of gangsters.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) where the crime took place is opposite the new district headquarters that is guarded 24 hours a day.
Central Province head of CID Henry Ondiek said on Sunday they had commenced investigation into the incident. “We are pursuing various angles and we hope to make more arrests and recovery,” he said.
Mr Ondiek said the gang struck past midnight stealing 20 laptop computers, 19 cameras and a G3 rifle.
Local police said the rifle, which was stolen from an Administration Police officer, was loaded with 20 bullets. The officer was found tied in one of the rooms.
According to officers who visited the scene, the motive of the raid was to get hold of the IEBC machines and the electoral materials.
“We believe the thieves wanted to take the materials, which are crucial in many ways,” said an officer aware of the incident.
