I am confident of winning Speaker seat, says Murgor

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY STAR REPORTER
LAWYER Philip Murgor yesterday said he was confident of being elected speaker of the Senate. Murgor said he had the support of the Cord coalition.
He presented his application on Monday. He will be proposed to the assembly by Kilifi senator-elect Stewart Madzayo and seconded by Machakos senator-elect Johnstone Muthama.
"I decided to stand after I was approached by several young senators-elect who said the senate needed fresh blood and the right person to set the pace for the Upper House. They said all the others who have expressed interest in the position were part of the old legislative and likely to continue doing things the old way," said Murgor.
The former Director of Public Prosecutions has practiced law for 25 years. Cord will go for a retreat in Karen today to lay strategies of how to use their numbers in the National Assembly and the Senate.
At the retreat, the alliance of ODM, Wiper Democratic Movement and Ford Kenya will decide on candidates for both speaker jobs. Murgor will fight for the seat with Jubilee's Ekwe Ethuro.
