A group of newly elected MPs met last Thursday at a Nairobi hotel to strategize on how to deal with members of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission for reducing the salaries they were expecting to earn once in office. According to our moles, the MPs-elect see two options— disband the commission altogether or passing a vote of no confidence with certain commissioners. They however seemed to have settled on the second option—targeting specific members of the commission— as the first option would require an amendment to the constitution which is an uphill task neither of them is currently interested in taking on.

It seems that any discussions of any sort about the just concluded elections is anathema anywhere outside of the Supreme Court. It seems that the security intelligence system has become so paranoid about people discussing the petitions before the Court or anything about the election that plainclothes policemen who are on the prowl have been warning citizens against speaking about politics or specifically about the elections results. Seems we are quickly regressing back to the bad old days of Moi's single party rule when state machinery and agents were deployed to stamp out any talk of dissent!

Last Friday, the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board was forced to call off a scheduled press conference where it was supposed to present its recommendations on the suitability or otherwise of several judges and magistrates who are currently serving on the bench. The board had to reschedule its press conference to Saturday after it found out that some of the judges and magistrates whom it was recommending to send home were deployed to swear in the speakers and members of the county assemblies. Kicking out the judicial officers when they were carrying out the task would have had serious ramifications on the devolved units.

For the last two weeks, administration police spokesman Masood Munyi has been issuing statements on behalf of the Inspector General David Kimaiyo even though there is an acting police spokesman—Charles Owino Wahong'o. Wags within Vigilance House have whispered to Corridors that the new state of affairs is due to the infighting and power re-alignments within the National Police Service. It seems the IG is uncomfortable with the acting spokesman one of the newly appointed senior policeman accused him of not toeing the line.
