CORD, Jubilee alliances eclipse rivals in race for MPs seats

By Standard Team
Presidential race between Uhuru Kenyatta ( Jubilee coalition) andRaila Odinga (CORD) was tight, and so was the fight for parliamentary seats.
ODM performed dismally in Central and South Rift regions, winning only one parliamentary seat.
But the Raila-led coalition scooped a whopping 34 seats out of the 41 that were available for grabs in Nyanza region.
Although URP dominated Rift Valley, the former ruling party Kanu managed to win the Rongai and Kuresoi North parliamentary seats in the county while ODM managed to win one seat in the newly created Nakuru West Constituency.
TNA managed 39 parliamentary seats in Mt Kenya region, APK eight while Narc got two seats and in Nyanza Province, CORD and affiliate parties captured 99 per cent of elective seats. URP swept 23 MPs seats out of the 31 slots in counties in Rift Valley.
The William Ruto-led party was also lucky to bag the Tharaka parliamentary seat won by Alex Muiru and the two Teso parliamentary seats in Busia County.
In Coast Province, CORD took 18 parliamentary seats out of 26, followed by Jubilee coalition five (TNA three and URP two), Amani (UDF two), KNC (Eagle Coalition) one.
In Kericho and Bomet counties, voters went by the six piece-voting pattern advocated by Ruto during his campaigns.
Out of the six parliamentary seats in Kericho, URP won five save for Belgut where former ruling party pulled a surprise with the party’s Eric Keter becoming the area’s new MP.
In the neighbouring Bomet, URP made a clean sweep of the five parliamentary seats in the county.
Raphael Letimalo retained his seat as the Samburu East MP on TNA ticket while Musa Lentoimanga, also from TNA, is the new MP for Samburu North. Jonathan Lelelit of URP was elected the new MP for Samburu West to complete Jubilee alliance’s dominance of the county.
Among the parties that have won crucial seats in the Mt Kenya region include Mwangi Kiunjuri’s Grand National Union (GNU), Charity Ngilu’s Narc and Kiraitu Murungi-led APK.
TNA dominated in the parliamentary contest in Central Kenya while the other parties performed well in the county seats.
The major beneficiary of the vote especially in Mt Kenya East is APK.
In Meru, ODM surprised many by bagging two parliamentary seats in the area perceived to be hostile to the party.

Voters in Kirinyaga and Kiambu, however, threw their weight behind TNA that scooped all the seats.
In Murang’a, the Gatanga parliamentary seat was won by Humphrey Njuguna alias Roho Safi of Narc. The party also bagged the Mathira seat won by youthful Peter Weru.
In Meru, ODM’s candidate Mpuri Aburi won the Tigania East parliamentary seat against APK and TNA.
Also romping home on the ODM ticket was Cyprian Kubai, who won the newly created Igembe Central seat. In the same region, APK won two parliamentary seats in North Imenti and Imenti Central constituencies.
URP swept 23 MPs seats out of the 31 slots in counties, which include Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Elgeyo/Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot and Turkana. URP took all seats in Uasin Gishu that include Soy, Turbo, Ainabkoi, Moiben, Kapsaret and Kesses.
It repeated the same feat in Elgeyo/Marakwet bagging Keiyo North, Keiyo South, Marakwet West and Marakwet East. Ford Kenya and ODM parties under CORD took two MPs seats each while New Ford Kenya, TNA and Kanu bagging one each.
One of the seats of MP went to an independent candidate, Wesley Korir, an athlete who won the Cherangany Constituency seat beating URP’s Joshua Kuttuny.
In Western, CORD won majority of elective seats with ODM managing to win 11 MPs seats, Ford Kenya four and Federal Party of Kenya two.
Mudavadi’s UDF party had eight parliamentary seats in the region while New Ford Kenya three.
Bungoma County parliamentary elections were slightly biased towards CORD as Ford Kenya and ODM parties’ aspirants won in five of the nine constituencies there. Amani coalition won three parliamentary seats in the county.
