CJ WILLY MUTUNGA tells RAILA, UHURU, IEBC and their lawyers to mind their tongues

Wednesday, the 20th of March 2013 -As three election petitions came up for mentioning before the Supreme Court today , Chief Justice Willy Mutunga issued an explicit warning to the parties involved saying they should refrain from trying the case in the public arena.

The CJ told the petitioners and respondents in the case not to discuss the merits or demerits of the case in public because the matter was currently before the Supreme Court and it is up to the court to decide which side makes the better argument.

Mutunga also advised the lawyers in the cases to advise their clients about the dangers involved in discussing the cases in public. Mutunga also advised the media to inform the public about the cases but not sensationally or impartially.

The CJ’s warning can be read as the court’s response to the public war of words between President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta and PM Raila Odinga who have traded accusations about the CORD election petition.

On Monday Raila claimed that he and not Uhuru had won the March 4thPresidential election with 5.7 million of the votes cast.

Yesterday Uhuru responded by telling his opponent to wait for the court’s verdict instead of making statements that are likely to incite the public;

“We are ready for the verdict but we cannot just wait. What we are doing is preparing ourselves so that when the outcome is in our favour we continue with our jobs.
