A look at the POLITICAL BATTLES in Parliament and Senate - Issack Hassan’s IEBC gazettes Names

Monday March 18, 2013 - The Issack Hassan’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has finally gazzetted the names of the newly elected leaders during the March 4th general election.

Those gazzetted include; 47 Governors and their Deputies, 47 Senators, 47 Women Representatives, 290 Member of Parliament and 1,450 County Representatives. This comes as big reprieve for some leaders who have pending court cases challenging their elections because the gazzettement simply paves the way for them to be sworn in.

The move now gives President Mwai Kibaki the opportunity to convene the first sitting of Parliament where speakers for both Senate and National Assembly will be elected and sworn in, thereafter overseeing the swearing in of MP’s and Senators in their respective houses.
It is bound to be the game of numbers in the transaction of the Business of the House with parties and Coalitions bracing themselves for big battles.

Raila’s ODM enjoys majority number of Governors at16, followed by Ruto’s URP at 10, Uhuru’s TNA has 8 Governors while Kalonzo’s Wiper has 4 Governors. Other smaller parties including Mudavadi’s UDF has each one Governor.

In the Senate both ODM and TNA have 11 seats while URP has 9. Wiper and Ford Kenya have 4 each while UDF, APK and KANU have 2 each. Narc and Federal Party have one each.

In National Assembly, ODM has 93 seats, TNA has 85, URP 72, Wiper 25, Ford Kenya 10 and KANU has 6 members of parliament.
