Police bosses sworn in

Three top police bosses have been sworn in during a brief ceremony in Nairobi.

Deputy Inspectors General of Police Grace Kaindi and Samuel Arachi and Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro were sworn in by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga Wednesday.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, who witnessed the ceremony, said with his deputies duly in office, it would help in ensuring a peaceful election.

“From today (Wednesday) they are going to move and deploy officers accordingly. We are going to be very fair as we discharge our responsibilities especially as we approach the General Election,” he said at the Supreme Court, Nairobi.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Independent Policing Oversight Authority chairman Macharia Njeru had opposed the appointments citing integrity of the officers.

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga said the objections had been considered before finally agreeing to swear them into office.

“Swearing-in is an administrative and not a judicial function. Once I get a gazette notice as long as there is no court order then we have to go on with the function,” he said.
