Amani coalition presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi will play a key role in determining the next President in the event of a run-off, new opinion polls reveal.
The polls conducted by Infotrak, Consumer Insight and Strategic Research last weekend show that a run-off is likely between Cord’s Raila Odinga and his Jubilee rival Uhuru Kenyatta.
Results from the three polls show that whereas Mr Odinga would trounce Mr Kenyatta with a narrow margin in round one, none of them would garner the required 50 per cent plus one of votes cast, leading to a run-off.
This would see Mr Mudavadi, who takes the third position, play the kingmaker role by tilting the race in favour of one of the candidates, reveal the surveys sponsored by Nation Media Group.
The Infotrak survey shows that Mr Odinga would garner 45.9 per cent of the votes cast if elections were held today, with Mr Kenyatta following closely with 44.4 per cent. Mr Mudavadi would finish a distant third with six per cent.
Mr Odinga also leads in Consumer Insight and Strategic Research surveys with 45 per cent and 44.4 per cent, respectively.
Mr Kenyatta is second in the two polls with 43 per cent and 43.9 per cent, respectively, and Mr Mudavadi is third with five and six per cent, respectively.
Since Mr Odinga and Mr Kenyatta would require a simple majority to win, they would count on Mr Mudavadi to throw his weight behind them.
The average sample size of the surveys carried out in 32 counties was 2,500.
