The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) has told Kenyans not to gamble with their votes and elect leaders who will implement the Constitution.
Cord's presidential candidate Raila Odinga and running mate Kalonzo Musyoka said opponents were not committed to implementing the new law and fighting negative ethnicity.
Mr Odinga and Mr Musyoka were speaking in Lamu County Saturday, where they asked voters to support the coalition in the March 4 General Election.
The Cord leaders urged Kenyans to shun tribalism and embrace tolerance to realise peace and national cohesion.
Saying Cord’s priority will be to solve the problem of historical land injustices in the region, the leaders pointed out that the coalition will improve infrastructure and fight poverty.
Addressing wananchi in Lamu Town, the leaders said Cord will fight negative ethnicity and unite Kenyans irrespective of tribe and political affiliations.
The leaders said the coalition will exploit the available natural resources including establishment of a special economic zone in Lamu to create wealth and improve the country’s economy.
They said the development of Lamu Port will enable Kenya to do business with countries such as South Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ethiopia among others
Mr Odinga and Mr Musyoka noted that Cord will raise the standard of living for women and youth by giving them grants to initiate income generating activities.
"Programmes such as Kazi Kwa Vijana could not benefit the youth because they did not have management skills and this is why Cord will embark on training the youth before giving them such grants,’’ said Mr Odinga.
The leaders blamed entrenched tribalism to bad leadership.
"I want you to vote for leaders who are committed to uniting all the Kenyan communities. Do not be bribed to vote for certain individuals. If somebody gives you money, take it and even ask for more.
"But at the end of the day vote for the right leadership that will give lasting solutions to problems facing our nation,’’ said Mr Musyoka.
Mr Odinga said his government will boost education including provision of 1,000 scholarships as a way of uplifting the youth.
The leaders said a Cord government will improve road network to enable resident access markets for their goods.
Cabinet ministers James Orengo (Lands), Fred Gumo (Regional Development) and former Kangundo MP Johnstone Muthama urged Kenyans to vote for Cord if the many challenges facing the country are to be solved.
Former nominated MP Shakilla Abdalla and Hussein Dado among other candidates for various political seats in the region addressed the rally.
Later, the leaders separately traversed the county wooing voters in different areas to support the alliance.
