NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 18 – A college student has admitted in court that he was masquerading as the Inspector General of Police, David Kimaiyo.
Jackson Siila Siro from the Kenya Technical Training College appeared at the Milimani chief magistrate’s court charged with four counts of impersonating the police chief, including opening a Facebook account in his name.
He had been posting messages on the social network purporting to be Kimaiyo, according to charges filed in court on Friday.
According to the charge sheet, the account had 10,000 likes by the time police pounced on him late on Thursday.
The magistrate has ordered the student to be remanded at the Muthaiga police station until Monday when more facts in the case will be read to him and sentencing done after he pleaded guilty.
Cases of people impersonating police officers and other prominent personalities have been on the increase. Two weeks ago a form three secondary school boy was charged in a Nairobi court with impersonating a police boss to obtain Sh90,000 from three MPs.
The student at Symbe Secondary School in Makueni pleaded guilty to pretending to be a police boss from Makueni and Mwiki. The student admitted trying to obtain Sh30,000 each from Mwingi South MP David Musila, Kitui West MP Charles Nyamai and Kitui South MP Isaac Muoki.
The student’s case followed another impersonation saga where Joshua Waiganjo is accused of masquerading as a Senior Superintendent of Police since October 2002.
The National Police Service Commission suspended three senior police officers including Rift Valley Provincial Police Chief (PPO) John M’mbijiwe over Waiganjo’s controversy.
Those suspended together with M’mbijiwe were Michael Remi Ngugi, the Anti Stock Theft Commandant in Gilgil and the Njoro divisional police chief Peter Njeru Nthiga.
