Producer sues ODM over Raila songs

BY WAHOME THUKU
ODM faces a lawsuit for allegedly playing two popular songs during campaign rallies without consent of producers.
A production firm, Studio Kenya, has moved to court to have the party and a lobby group headed by Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s wife Ida, blocked from using the songs over a Sh6 million production deal that has gone sour.
The songs Agwambo and Sibanduki were allegedly produced on July 20, last year. The company filed the case at the High Court in Nairobi yesterday, against ODM and Sibanduki Lobby Group whose patron is Ida. Studio Kenya claims they entered into a contract with the group early last year to produce the songs to popularise Raila’s presidential bid.
Studio Kenya head Alphonsius Nyasetia said the lobby group approached them in March, last year, and asked them to produce songs to be used as presidential campaign tool for Raila.
They entered into an agreement to compose and produce the songs at Sh5 million. Studio Kenya artistes would then perform the songs at Sh200,000 per performance. The firm would also be paid Sh400,000 for production of 400 compact disks.
Mr Nyasetia said it was agreed that only after paying for the production would ODM be allowed to play the songs at their rallies.
He said Studio Kenya artistes performed the songs during several key ODM meetings at Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi, Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, Malindi, Serena, and Crown Plaza hotels and other venues in Nairobi.
