IEBC wants that SCHOOLS to be CLOSED on Thursday to allow for nominations

Tuesday, the 15th of January 2013 - The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has today suggested that public schools be closed this coming Thursday so as to facilitate party primaries.

The IEBC’s recommendation echoes a similar appeal issued by Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo last week. The recommendation that public schools be closed on Thursday is based on the fact that most of the political parties will use their premises to conduct their nomination exercises.

Most of the leading parties like the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), the Jubilee Coalition and the Amani Coalition are scheduled to hold their nominations on Thursday as a way of preventing aspirants from jumping ship.

While making the appeal for public schools to be closed on Thursday, IEBC chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan also asked political parties to liaise with the police so as to ensure security;

"We expect political parties to have identified appropriate and secured venues for nominations. They must have compiled and shared the list of polling stations with relevant security and administrative organs of state," Mr Hassan said.
