Corridors of Power

MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
A senior police office based at Police Headquarters, Vigilance House, wept openly on the day Mathew Iteere handed over to David Kimaiyo, the new Inspector General of Police.  It is not clear why the man cried but those close to him whispered to Corridors that it was because Iteere was his godfather. The officer later told a friend he cried because he is not sure of his position and his wealth now that Iteere is out.

A vocal MP has raised eyebrows among his colleagues after he recently bought a house in the upscale Muthaiga area and a top-of-the-range Range Rover Vogue. The MP, who is serving his second term, has struggled with his finances during the 10 years he has been in Parliament even though he is one of the most active MPs on the floor of the House. Shocked by the news of the man's sudden riches, his colleagues have been drawing parallels between his character and the silence he has adopted in the ongoing political deals.

The mystery of how a Kajiado county aspirant managed to pay his nomination fees without presenting his academic papers has left party officials and fellow hopefuls baffled. The man, who is seeking the governorship, paid the required nomination fee without the party officials noticing that he lacked education certificates. And he did so almost two weeks after the deadline the party had set for aspirants. The aspirant has been going around boasting that he will get the nod even though the party declared the nomination will be free and fair.

There can be  extreme indecency and insensitivity in politics in the name of gaining power. On Saturday, during the burial of Solicitor General Wanjuki Muchemi's son in Ihururu, Nyeri, a senator aspirant hung his posters along the funeral procession route with little regard to the feelings of the bereaved family. Another aspirant for the seat was overheard quipping that it was the height of insensitivity. He wondered aloud what level of desperation would drive a man to take such action.
