Raila urges Kiraitu to join ODM

By John Majau
Prime Minister Raila Odinga has urged Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi to abandon his Alliance Party of Kenya and join ODM.
Raila said Kiraitu and he have been together in politics for some time, adding that the South Imenti MP should join him instead of blindly following other leaders.
He said they have worked harmoniously since the time they fought for multi-party democracy.
Raila regretted that the minister later left his fold and joined another political bandwagon, which he should dump and retrace his steps to “where he belongs”.
“Kiraitu should now abandon the ‘bus’ because it has no petrol or driver meaning it is headed nowhere,” said Raila.
Speaking at Chogoria, Nkubu, Meru and Timau towns during the third day of his Meru region tour, Raila urged Kenyans to shun tribalism when electing the next president and to make decisions based on credentials. He said the politics of tribalism are outdated and have been overtaken by events, as they do not bring development.
The PM called on Kenyans to emulate Americans who went against tribal affiliations by voting in Barack Obama who has roots in Africa.
He said it is encouraging to see Americans give Obama a second chance regardless of his ethnicity, noting that it is high time Kenyans did the same.
Miraa trade
Raila also cautioned Kenyans against underrating any leader on the basis of his place of origin, saying that all Kenyans were equal and should be given a fair chance to lead.
He promised that once elected, his government will establish a youth fund to enable the youth start income generating projects in order to contain the unemployment.
The Premier said he will consult with countries opposed to the miraa trade and push for its legalisation noting its medicinal value.
He called on Kenyans to avoid electing those opposed to the Constitution because such leaders will not implement it.
“The Constitution, which is meant to bring development changes in security, education, food, employment and shelter to Kenyans, is useless if not implemented,” said Raila.
He regretted that the Constitution has many enemies bent on ensuring it is not implemented.
“If such people are elected, they will change it like it happened to the Lancaster constitution,” said the PM.
Meanwhile, ODM reloaded team has taken its campaigns to North Rift region where they drummed up support for the party.
Equal stake
The team led by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Ababu Namwamba and assistant minister for Energy Magerer Langat began the two-day campaign at Nandi Hills town where they met with locals in two different churches.
They attended a service at All Saints ACK church before they proceeded to Our Lady of Peace Catholic church and later finalised their tour in Nandi County at Kapsabet town.
The team said that ODM was seeking a willing collaboration with all Kenyans adding that the party believed that everyone had equal stake in the making of the next government. “We maintain that ODM stands for peace, cohesion and unity and all Kenyans who value these qualities would support the party,” he said.
He said that the team was in North Rift to seek support from the locals who had supported Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for presidency during the 2007 elections.
“The journey that Raila started in 2007 was interrupted and we have come to plead with the residents to support him so that he can complete it,” said the minister.
The minister called on the residents to shun tribal politics saying that the nation was not electing a president for one community.
