Corridors of Power

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2012 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
Is someone planning to spark off violence in informal settlements of Nairobi city ahead of the general election? Our moles tell us that certain individuals are already moving around the slums boasting they can mobilise mobs for illegal mass action at any time. In Mathare and Huruma, the names of two people — Garang and Lumumba — have been mentioned. The two are so confident that nothing can happen to them they even threaten police officers who dare try and arrest them for their illegal activities. The two men would seem to have godfathers in high political circles who are issuing instructions.

Public confidence in the judiciary's transparency might be dented if the advertisements for the appointment of registrars of the High Court and the Supreme Court are anything to go by. For the High Court registrar's job, applicants are required to have at least ten years experience, among other qualifications. But for the more senior position of registrar of the Supreme Court, the applicants need nine years experience at the most! Our moles tell us the latter qualification seems to be tailor-made for a junior magistrate who went for further studies abroad and on return was appointed registrar in an acting capacity. Coincidentally, the junior magistrate is related to a Supreme Court judge!
