ODM, TNA score big in civic polls

The National Alliance (TNA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) scored crucial victories in Uasin Gishu and Kakamega counties during Monday’s civic by-elections to stamp their authority in the North Rift and Western province respectively.
TNA also made a strong showing in Nyamira county where its candidate clinched the Nyaramba/Nyangaga civic seat while ODM maintained its supremacy in Kilifi county where it won the Kaliangombe civic seat during the by-elections.
TNA’s Jane Wangui Murigi pulled a fast one on the United Republican Party (URP) when she trounced its candidate Stephen Mugwira by 1,995 to 476 votes to become the new councillor for the Market ward in Eldoret town.
ODM’s Caustenciah Jelimo Tanui finished third with 343 votes ahead of United Democratic Forum’s Josephat Kemboi who garnered 223 votes.
In Bukura ward in Kakamega county, ODM’s Reuben Nyangweso garnered 1,850 votes to capture the seat, shaking off a strong challenge from UDF’s  Walter Andati who got 1,195, while Maendeleo democratic party’s Faith Manya got 30 votes.
ODM also clinched the Kaliangombe vivic seat in Kilifi county after its candidate Daniel Chibule garnered 657 votes to beat his closest challenger, Nathaniel Nzaka of UDF who got 142 votes.
Alex Mweni of the New Democrats party finished third with a paltry 86 votes ahead of URP’s Julius Tsama who garnered 59 votes.
Strong competition
The results in the Market ward and Bukura civic seats are a pointer to the strong competition likely to be witnessed between ODM, TNA, UDF and URP during the next General Election.

Going into the by-election, Market ward had been perceived to be a URP stronghold while the UDF candidate was expected to clinch the Bukura ward seat, only for TNA and ODM to pull surprises.
TNA also pulled a fast one on ODM in Nyamira county after Peter Onyango Mose clinched the seat after garnering1,079 votes against Charles Sagwe’s 1,069 votes with ODM officials in the area blaming the defeat on internal wrangles at the local branch.
ODM councillors Charles Barongo and Stanley Charana defied their party and campaigned for the TNA candidate and could be seen celebrating the outcome soon after the results were announced by the returning officer Justus Naliakho.
ODM also retained all the civic seats in its Nyanza province stronghold with its candidate, Bernard Onyango clinching the Wangchieng civic seat after garnering 1,187 votes against 191 votes received by his closest challenger, TNA’s Alphonce Onyango.
In the neighbouring Wire Migwa ward, ODM’s Jevis Ochieng Oduor was declared the winner with 704 votes followed by TNA’s David Akuku who got 293 votes while Jeconia Gumbo of Kanu had 48 votes.
The party also clinched the East Kadem civic seat after its candidate Eliakim Obinju got 914 votes beating his closest challenger Peter Obiero who got 383 votes.
