No let up as doctors’ strike bites

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union says its members will continue with the ongoing strike until the government addresses all their grievances.
Union's chair Dr. Victor Ng'ani at the same time warned that the health sector risks experiencing a complete paralysis beginning Monday when Consultants joins the industrial strife.
Speaking to KBC on Saturday, Dr. Ng'ani said will stay put until the government implements all the issues under the return to work formulae hammered out following the first doctors' strike in December. He said there was no good will from the government in resolving the contentious issues.
He said the Union has so far not been handed the court order and could not work on media reports.
On Friday, Medical Services Minister Prof Anyang' Nyong'o called on doctors to respect the courts and call off the strike.
He said that the government was prepared to address the doctors' grievances in an amicable manner adding that the monies they are demanding for public sponsored doctors was a matter between his Ministry, the Ministry of Higher Education and the University of Nairobi.
The Minister said there was no fear of brain drain from the medical fraternity as the health sector was working on strategies to attract more medics into the country.
Higher education assistant Minister Dr Kilemi Mwiria is however calling for dialogue between the two parties.
But even as the push and shove continues between KMPDU and the Ministry of Medical Services, patients countrywide are bearing the brunt of the grand standing.
