Mungatana claims GSU razed houses in Tana Delta

An MP has questioned the rationale of the General Service Unit officers blocking the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) officials from accessing a village in Tana Delta.
KRCS was delivering humanitarian aid to families affected by the recent attacks. Garsen MP Danson Mungatana also wants Internal Security Minister to explain why the media have been barred from the area.
While seeking a ministerial statement in Parliament, the MP said after houses were razed in Ozi village, humanitarian aid agencies and the media have been barred from accessing the area.
This is contrary to common practice where aid agencies and the media are given access to trouble spots as special and key groups to highlight the problems and offer aid.
“I want the minister to clarify why the GSU stopped KRCS officials from accessing Ozi village to offer humanitarian aid. I also want to know why the Press has been stopped from accessing the area,” said Mr Mungatana.
About 67 houses were razed on Monday and Mungatana has pointed an accusing finger at the security personnel.
He wants Acting Internal Security Minister Yusuf Haji to confirm whether the GSU were involved.
There have been reports that the officers could have torched the houses as they combed the area to flush out those with illegal firearms and the MP wants to know who issued the directive and if the reports are true.
He wants police officers with Cushitic leanings to be removed from the group dispatched to the area to dispel fears that the operation could be lopsided. Attorney General Githu Muigai undertook to inform Mr Haji to deliver the statement.
